Hi there,

We are currently digging some footings for a small open porch, we are digging these to 600mm and we have found a clay rainwater pipe in an L shape like the attached photo.

I don't believe we can shutter this as it is a large portion of the footings? Are we able to concrete over this pipe? Or should we encase it somehow? We have read encasing it with pea shingle could be an idea?

We are going to pour the footings to the same level as the original house, so the clay pipe near the house will likely be above the foundations.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Carefully dig the lot out, and leave the pipe (inside the porch footprint) open, so that you can temporarily divert the rainwater into it. Dig your trenches and pour your concrete, being mindful that the concrete (top) is not higher than the drains. Once the concrete is set, re-hash the drains so that the new 'T' connection is outside the building footprint, and lintel over.
If the top of the concrete does sneak a bit higher, hack some of it away whilst it is still green, to make life easier.
