clean walls

I am preparing walls for a skim coat and have cleaned off the old paper and washed the walls, however no matter how hard I try it’s proving very difficult to remove the old paste, it seams to just get stickier with the water.

Do I need to get it all of or will it have no effect on the plaster?
Does anyone know how to get it off I’ve tried everything I can think of, sugar soap, fairy, lemon

Have you tried to clean the glue off with a hot solution of sugar soap and a mild abrasive like white pot-scourer?
