I'm making a feature fireplace, having pulled the plaster off the wall, I have really good brickwork.

How do I clean this up? Is is a case of just elbow grease or will one of the brick and patio cleaners do the job?

The bricks also need repointing, should this be done prior to cleaning the bricks?

Thanks for any advice.

Bets to rub brickwork over with wire brush. You can clean it with a strong vinager solution if there is any sooty deposits on it. Rake out any loose pointing and then repoint. When all pointed it can be sealed with 50 / 50 Turps and raw linseed oil. The tuprs shows up the true colour of the brickwork and the oil keeps it that way.

Hi Robbie,

hope you don't mind me asking as I am undertaking a very similar project...

When you reffered to the 50 / 50 mix, did you mean pure turpentine or subsitute ?
