I removed back liner of my eyelevel SMEG fitted fan oven and sprayed Kleenoff oven cleaner 2-3 applications and wiped and lightly rinsed it off and then dried it as much as I was able to do (I have very short arms and the door opens downwards plus I dont know how to remove the door and it's probably too heavy for me).
Made a reasonably good job and hoping it stopped the acrid taint taste we are getting in our roasted foods. I thought I would turn on and dry out the oven and it blacked out all our electricity. )o: the trip had gone and we switched the oven knob to off, switched the cooker off at the wall switch (which I now now I should have done before cleaning it but hey ho I am OK) and my husband said later it probably just needs to dry out where some rinsing water got into some wiring behind the fan? Do you agree or have I naffed my lovely SMEG oven? Is it OK to switch it on again maybe tomorrow morning to see if it is dried out and working again or could it be some other thing has happened?

It's highly likely that you have allowed water to ingress in to electrical components.
Even if you had isolated it prior to cleaning, this is unlikely to have prevented the lose of power.
I assume by the whole electrics going, off including lights, it was the RCD that trip rather than the MCB?

Everything yes RCD yes )o: All power back on but wondering if I have permanently damaged my oven and whether it is safe to try it again tomorrow?

The fan will have a cover that can be removed, inside the appliance, sometimes three or four screws.
It maybe worth a wipe round to take any dampness/moisture away, while isolated. The element will also be around this area, that could also have been affected.
I have used a hair dryer in the past to speed things up a little.

Could not promise leaving until tomorrow, would alter the situation as it stands.

I wiped the element which ringed the fan yes but it was as dry as I could manage given the fan is close to the back and you cant get fingers or cloth behind it. The caustic cleaner and some water may have dribbled liberally down the back of the fan but I dried off the element well. I will certainly try the hair dryer and i have put a dehumidifier in the kitchen. Thank you for your help. What is the next step if it continues to trip out do I call an ordinary electrician or does it have to be a sparky who specialises in our brand of oven? Unfortunately I cant access behind the oven to take a look as it is all enclosed by units. Thanks

At this time it is to do what you can practically do as far as drying any moisture from electric components, be gentle with heat from hair dryer, don't be too excessive.
Then it's fingers crossed for morning switch on and hopefully the fault has cleared.
If no joy, I guess the appliance is still under warranty, call out engineer and plead ignorance! But I didn't tell you that ;)

Even without 'pleading ignorance' it surely would not be an acceptable situation if such a product could not withstand what sounds like perfectly reasonable cleaning activities - which suggests the oven may well have been in some way faulty (or even have a design fault).

Kind Regards, John

We inherited the oven when we bought the hosue and guess it is some eyars old and not in warranty. The lady was 'no cook' as she said herself and it is old but lightly used. By 'engineer' do you mean an electrician or a specialist oven engineer or both? Is there anyone out there in Essex who might deal with this if it does not switch on successfully tomorrow? Thanks to all.

If it was in warranty, you would then call the product manufacturers service line and they would send an engineer out.
Some electricians will do repairs on ovens, some wont.

There will be, but can't offer you a name.
