Cleaning Pewter

I bought an Art Nouveau soup tureen at the week-end. It is badly in need of a very thorough polishing. I have been doing this with a high street polish for pewter but not getting very far. Each duster I use gets completely black rapidly and though a bit shinier there is not a huge difference on the tureen. Does any one have any tips abourt how to go about cleaning this. Would washing it in soap and water be good, bad or indifferent? Does pewter ever get to a stage where no amount of polishing will bring it back to life/

i used to have a pewter tankard, it never shone, i alwas assume that pewter doesnt shine
