Cleaning tiling adhesive off tools

What's the best way to remove old tile adhesive from floats and other tools? How can I soften up this stubborn stuff?

No, not practical. I'm looking to clean all the little bits of around the (wooden) handles and where the handles are riveted to the float plates.

Use an old (or new if you're feeling flush) wood chisel and scrape it away.
