My close coupled cistern has started leaking all the time, not just on flushing. I believe this is the seal between the bottom of the cistern and the siphon but should I replace the donut washer as well while I've got it off ?

yes

and see if you can get some stainless coachbolts bolts and wingnuts for next time (6mm on ebay I think)

you'll soon know why.

and a bit of silicone grease.

thanks chaps.

Is it also ok to blame the wife for the leak by claiming she "sits on it funny" ?

more likely just age

but cistern bleach blocks (which are very good for removing limescale) do shorten the life of rubber parts.

If you have a ballvalve with a stem going through the bottom of the cistern, this might be a good time to change its rubber seal. Consider a new Fluidmaster or Torbeck filling valve and flusher, they are amazingly quiet.
