Closed Fireplace

We have 2 upstairs fireplaces that have been closed off and vents put in. I'm wondering if it's possible to close off the vent to have a flat wall and put a vent brick in the outer side of the chimney instead.
Hope someone can help.

The important thing is to have a vent, which side of the wall it is does not matter
