closing red valve

Hi Having read through some of these forums it would seem that my problem in turning off the hot water supply is that the RED valve although closing easily does not stop the water.
Any thoughts please,am just trying to remove a old sink.

Knacked gate valve!, turn off main stop tap drain down tank,do what you need to do, renew gate valve ,open stop tap, check for leaks. PRESTO!
