Sorry this is a bit off topic but thought someone may be able to advise. When we moved in there was an open fronted gas coal effect fire which gave off a horrible smell. I presumed it came from the artificial coals & because I was unable to find replacements, we bought a new fire, again a coal effect one but this time with a clear glass front panel sealing the assembly. However this one is also beginning to smell & I wondered if this was a common thing & also if I can replace the coals with artificial stones rather than coals or will they smell just as bad. Thanks for any advice

I presume you had this professionally installed and that all the flue and (if required) vent checks were done and OK'd. New fires do smell for the initial first few periods of operation as this burns of the coatings left behind from the production process.
As for adding non standard parts to your fire then NO. The coals supplied with your fire ensure a correct flame picture and have been tested and approved.
If in any doubt call your installer back.
