Hi

The vent pipe above my cold water tank in the loft is expelling water. Why is this? How can i stop this happening? Is it dangerous? I don't have an immersion heater so have ruled out that failing...

Try turning off water mains to house and see what happens in tank, is it filling tank and overflowing

turned off the stopcock under the kitchen sink and yes that has stopped it. but why is this happeneing. it is puzzling me ...

no not at all. have a mixer in the kitchen which has been there for years. the shower also has been there for years. the kitchen has mains to it and hot from the hot water cylinder. the shower has cold from the cold tank and hot from the cylinder.

Cold main supply is getting in to your hot water supply and filling tank in loft, could be mixer tap in kitchen. if you can isolate the cold supply to this (isolation valve) you may find it`s passing.

i heard about this potential problem, but surely the water would go into the cold water tank via the cold feed to the hot water cylinder and not over the vent pipe?

I do beg yer pardon! I completely misread the part of your post saying `vent.` That`s why in my first reply I asked if tank was overflowing.
It` quite normal for vent pipe to discharge water (not continuously) into tank as the hot water expands up pipe.

the vent pipe should not pump over if a mixer fitting is letting by, as desribed. as water always levels up, so the water level in the cold water tank will be the same as that in the vent pipe, and vice versa..... so a mixer fitting being fauly shouldn't allow your vent pipe to discahrge.

UNLESS the cold feed gate valve is partially/fully closed ?? in this case you would have no hot water though from any taps......

What?!! No it's not!

Right. Is the tank large 70/50 gallon (as in could you take a bath in it) or small (the size of a suitcase) 25 gallon? Excuse the poor analogies, effectively is it a big tank or a small tank?

As for its normal for expansion water to come out the vent. No it's not and would infer a poorly installed system and/or an issue with over heating.

Dependant on whether it's a cwsc (cold water storage cistern), supplying cold water to the hot water cylinder and cold outlets in the bathroom etc. (big tank).

or a

F&E tank (Feed and Expansion) filling and topping up the heating system(small tank).

Think I may be talking at cross purposes, have re read posts. Can you fill in with a little more info. Is there water discharging outside your home or is water discharging back into the tank?

Re read again, need glasses  Can you describe the system in your loft i.e. The big plastic tank with the pipe bent over above it has water coming out of it. Not trying to be patronizing.
