What's the difference, (apart from the colour) between black (magnetite?) and the chocolate brown stuff? Are they caused by different things? Saw web site once where it was all explained but have forgotten and can't find it.Thanks.

Black iron oxides form when there is little oxygen available, like in a central heating system, whereas the rust coloured oxide form when there is ample oxygen present, in air or a CH system pumping over or otherwise drawing in air.

A chocolate colour suggests a mixture of oxides. Magnetite is one particular oxide, but not necessarily the one most common in CH sludge. If you want to find out more try this.

Cheers Chris. Got to flush a nasty old system that was obviously in a really bad way. Broke into the primaries and they're dripping chocolate, possibly the worst I've seen. Dismantled the pump to see if it was salvageable (cheapskates). Scraping off the chocolate revealed a thick layer of black beneath don't think I've seen that before. I reckon the black was in when the Suprima was put on (corroded to death in under 4 years) and the chocolate has come since then. I fear for the five out of 6 ancient downstairs rads that aren't (scheduled) to be changed!
