hi,
has anyone got any idea why our combi boiler keeps blowing fuses.
its an isar boiler from ideal standard,
its only over a year old, but they wont repair it as it was replaced during the guarantee in 2001, the 4th boiler we have had.
the fuse it blows is on the pcb,
they have told us it will cost £150 + to have a look,
we can't afford that so we have had no hot water or heat for 2 weeks now
can anyone help
thanks

Who are "THEY"

I find if you talk nicely to the manufacturer's technical department, they are very helpful.

Your boiler is blowing fuses as there is obviously a fault.

You claim 'they' will not repair it as you have had four boilers already!

Would be interesting to learn full story why 4 and what problems you have had.

I have always found Ideal helpful both engineers and tech support. Who fitted the boiler?

Where abouts in UK are you?

Alan

In November 2001 we had gas central heating and a combi boiler fitted by ideal standard in Hull. (Ideal Coragon is the name ideal standard use for fitting boilers)
We had problems with the first boiler and it was replaced 3 times with the same make and model. The problem was every time we used the hot water or the heating kicked in there was a very loud bang, We had the guvner changed countless times and various parts in the boiler. Ideal said it was a design fault.
When it went again in August 2002 it was replaced with an isar combi boiler, the boiler came with a 2-year guarantee
This has been ok till March 2004, when it started blowing fuses. There is power going to the boiler so the problem has to be inside the boiler.
We rang ideal and we were told the guarantee had ran out in November 2003, we told them the boiler was guaranteed till august 2004, they told us the guarantee started in November 2001 and the boilers were replaced under that guarantee.
We are in Beverley, East Yorkshire

The original isar was nasty...the sump would clog up and then leak into the boiler thus blowing fuses and obviously leaking....have you had any signs of condensation or leaks?. The new isars are vastly improved by the way, they needed to be.

there is no signs of any condensation or leaks

there is a new fan available to cure the problem of blowing the PCB fuse, common problem

Mex,

What type of fuse are you using as a replacement?

It should be a 3.15 Amp Anti-Surge (T) fuse. Some suppliers refer to these as "Slow Blow" or "Time Delay" fuses. If you've been using Quick-Blow (F) fuses instead, then that would explain why they keep failing.

Incidentally, I know this will not help, but according to gas-news.co.uk Ideal have now solved the problem with your old boiler:

"Their explosive ignition issue has been resolved as well. Apparently the Dutch PCB manufacturers had allegedly changed a board component without telling anyone and a voltage drop was occurring between the board and the igniter. The majority of PCBs are now made in Barnsley and a hefty cable sheath has been added for good measure."
