Comedy Being Strangled?

About xx years ago I left social work before I got sacked because the place I worked at, if some C did not like you, anything you said could be twisted into a hate crime.

The poster that said bring back "chalky" - when i was younger i was foolish and did not recognise the true hurt some people felt as it was the "norm." Now I get it as there is a time and place for everything but people used to mimic the clown at one of the places I worked at to send up not from this country.

The problem with racist, homophobic, Islamophobic, anti-Semitic jokes, etc is that they a) normalise such comments and behaviour, b) provide material for intentional and unintentional racists, and c) suggest to gullible people that the 'myths' are true.

Such comedians rely on offending people who are not in their audience. How would such comedians fare if they offended their audience?

One Julie McKenzie, a councillor for the SNP, wants all the members of Jimmy Carr's audience prosecuted for laughing at the joke.

I had to find a chair because I very nearly collapsed. This is the most sense you have ever made in all the time you've been here since they kicked you off Mumsnet.

If I could just slightly poke you to alter your line of thought towards something which may be a teensy weensy little bit closer to the truth. Comedians play to their audience, the comedian isn't always a racist, but their audience . . . . . !

It would be foolhardy for anyone to stand up & say "all of you lot are racists" when it is sooo much easier to cancel who they've come to see.

I am personally offended by James Corden.
Not for anything he's said, since i try to avoid the obsequious oaf whenever possible, but just in general.
I can't put my finger on why this is but the sight of his piggy mush makes my blood curdle.
Would i cancel him? Well, some people - baffling as it may be to me - find him funny, so i just change the channel to keep him as far as possible.
An arrangement that suits us both, i feel.

I haven't heard the joke by Jimmy Carr but from the headlines i can understand why a joke like that is offensive to the people concerned...it's impossible to find anything funny about the Holocaust and i agree he should be censured but he's always pushed the boundaries of good taste to make people wince and i'm sure he'll do it again.
I've never been a fan of stand-up comedy as they always come across as a bit too needy - apart from Robin Williams, who could bring me to the point of an aneurysim when he was on form.
Extremists aren't going to get any worse for hearing a joke, nor will they change their minds by listening to the wailing of the Woke.

Maybe not worse, but more open with their bigotry because they think it's acceptable.

The unaware may become aware. Even your use of the word 'woke' is used as a weapon. It's become an attack on political awareness in society, by the bigoted.

As we mention in the video above, woke has now become weaponised – and the way it is used now is markedly different from the racialised origins of the term.

The term 'Tory' was originally a 18th century insult but they simply embraced it til the original meaning was lost to time.
Perhaps 'Woke' can become embraced over time to separate the people who continue to use antediluvian ways of thinking from those who wish our society to become truly cosmopolitan.
I think some folk already did that with the term 'snowflake' by pointing out that millions of snowflakes will combine to form an impervious surface that's resistant to many forms of abuse.

In post #12 above Andrew Lawrence retells the joke. It's not that funny really.

Bernard Manning used to tell lots of Jewish jokes but I don't remember him ever making one about the Holocaust or the gas chambers. His jokes were mainly about the Jews' reputation for being tight. For instance: "Two jews are walking down the street and they suddenly spot a gang of skinheads coming towards them. Jew no1 says to the other "Oh ****, I think we're going to get our heads kicked in". Jew no.2 replies "Yes. Here's that £500 I owe you".

The wokes would have have heart attacks at a Chubby Brown gig.
I've never liked Chubby Brown, his act seems to be much effing, blinding and c*nts just for the sake of it and not much genuine comedy. Bernard Manning had the balance right, as did Jerry Sadowitz, who was popular in the 1990s. Genuine comics.

I agree about James Corden. Not funny, unpleasant to look at and seems to be on every TV programme. I felt the same about Mel Smith in the 1980s.

I thought Jimmy Carr's Netflix special was excellent and he made some very good points about it not being limited to Jews. If it's funny and doesn't promote hate, the its fine. A lot of the anti-racism comedians don't see a problem about attacking so called white people. e.g. Romesh Ranganathan, who just isn't funny on any level.
