Good morning all.

I wonder if someone could help me and explain what is meant by the clean air act when installing boiler flues.

I have a plant room and am looking to install 5 x Potterton 115kw boilers with vertical flues 600mm apart; the top of the terminals to the floor is approx. 5m.

However I seem to think a few years ago that due to the clean air act you cannot site more than 3 boilers on one wall due to the clean air act and pluming might be an issue.

I have contacted the manufacturer who said fitting 5 boilers on one wall with vertical flues 600mm apart will be ok and they was unaware of the clean air act saying no more than 3 boilers can be fitted on one wall.

Has anyone else come across this problem and if so can some wise owl explain what the ruling is and will I need planning permission to install these flues and what does this clean air act actually mean as information is very vague. I have looked into the BS regs but again information is very basic.

Yep.
It's to do with stack/flue height and the aggregate output of the boiler.

You must go vertical with that quantity of KW(over 366.4kw top of head).
Number of boilers is irrelevant it's the output.

From memory there's a 200kw threshold as well which I think applies to one boiler horizontally flued below 3m

You will require planning permission for the flues!

More serious question would be why would you want to fit 5 boilers let alone 5 pottertons.

Thanks Lee for your reply, Its not as striaght forward as it seems, Started off with 3 already installed a couple of years ago but the supply demand has grown so decided to add 2 more to keep the price down.

Do you have website I could visit to print off the information you have provided or a BS number what says this/

Thanks Lee
