compaq resario - dvd drive fault?

My Philips dvdram sdvd8821h will not write dvd's! It will write and play cd's and play dvd's but won't write dvd's. Is there an obvious problem I'm overlooking? I am just trying to backup my business accounts using Microsoft software that came already on my laptop.

What software/DVD media type are you using?

has it always not done this or has it started doing it, if so when / how long

Could be your writer does not like the type or manufacturer of the disc. on philips site you should find a list of discs (media) suitable for your drive.
