composite roofing tiles?

I am considering a new roof and a friend of mine in france suggested composite tiles ) recommending the higher quality products are made from fiberglass and asphalt as these are considered to be the most durable of the composite tiles.

Is this a good idea?

No. Devalues your house and traditional materials will outlive you anyway.
