As part of a house renovation, what would be involved to concrete the first floor? We've had some heavy duty RSJs put in, in some areas where an extension has been built and also where existing load baring walls were moved. Does it add a considerable amount of weight?

Do you want to replace the current joist & board floor with block & beam?

It would have been a good idea to plan at the build stage rather than try to retro-fit a block & beam floor

Ideally not.

Out of interest, what were you hoping to do?

No idea hence why I'm asking the question here as I don't know what is required. If that's how concrete first floors are built ie block and beam then it's too late.

As to why it was not planned for before, well it's just a question I'm asking now out of curiosity to see what's possible. Not a biggie if we can't do it.

But can't it be done any other way using wood joists etc?

There are a number of ways of installing a 'concrete' floor but they need to be designed early on rather than retro fitted.

The joists you have are not capable of supporting any form of concrete floor.
