does anyone know if this is possible

ive just had a electrician round and he doesn't think so.

The PIR has a brown wire which goes to live, a blue to neutral and the orange wire is the switched output from the PIR

then I have a standard dimmer switch

can anyone shed any light on this? (sorry)

If the PIR output is on a set of relay contacts then it should work just fine. If the output is solid-state, such as a triac or similar, then there's a good chance that it will not work.

Can't you try it wired up on a bench first?

It sounds like it might work, providing the dimmer is connected to the 'load'side of the PIR, and the maximum and minimum load is within the manufacturers specs.... but I wouldn't want to guarantee it.

I can understand your electrician being reluctant to install it, as he could create a whole hatful of headaches for himself if it doesn't behave as expected.

how would I find out if its relay or solid state?

If it makes a clicking sound whenever the PIR is activated, there's probably a relay in there. If you don't already have the PIR, then you will need to consult and instructions and, ultimately, probably end up asking the manufacturer. Either that or bite the bullet and try it...
