Connecting my laptop to my tv

Hi Guys
I have a av kit off the bay connected it up and no picture on the tv!!
Am i doing something wrong

and thanks alastairreid, I looked at this and found it helped alittle but not fully.
Done some more research and found that you switch everthing off connect your cables turn the laptop on and right click your desktop and click properties and display settings and click advanced then displays and you should beable to choose a tv option and thats it. I found that the 15pin cable gives a better picture quality than the s video cable.
if this doesn`t make sense do a search!

i have found a programme which gives me setanta on my laptop (free fitba)and would like tolink my laptop to my tv as well.
