connections on Hot water cylinders

Me and my mate changed his hot water cylinder to day.We used new brass connections and PTFE tape.But had a few leaks.My mate thinks he knows every thing i was sure each connections should have a fibre or plastic washer + PTFE tape.The worse leak was on the heater he fixed it with the spanner and hammer .

So washers or not
