It looks to me as if the incoming cable loops into his ?iron? service head, then back out again to go to the next dwelling.

My understanding from talking to a DNO guy who came to take the p*** when I asked for a price for moving the cutout and meter outside is this:

If next door has PME it is not a prob, but I doubt it from what we see.

I very much doubt it - I expect it's TN-S like mine. I'm guessing it's like this:

If I'm right then his earth path is via the magenta section to my MET and then shares my green path.

So if I were to disconnect the green cable he'd have no earth either, unless he got a flaky TT one from the short loop of supply cable..

The diagrams BAS has posted are correct.

If either of the uninsulated earths were removed from the MET then next door could well be left with no earth (although there may be parallell paths provided by other services.)

In the end I decided to wait and see what sort of meter I got.

It was fitted today - it has a built in isolator.

The only thing is it needs a tool to operate (slotted screwdriver), so is it OK as the single point of isolation for the entire installation if there are multiple CUs?

I would say not. It requires a tool so it is not for unskilled people. Also, is it a DP switch complying with one of the applicable standards required for Isolation at the origin of a domestic installation?

That doesn't mean to say you couldn't use if not. Just that you couldn't label it Main Switch.

Anyway:



I've looked on their website but can't find this product - guess it's a special for the supplier.

The pictures don't show this clearly - the part that looks like this:

is an indicator behind the sealed acrylic cover.

I've not examined it closely, but at a quick glance it looks like this is where you poke and twist with the end of a knife, or a nail file etc:

and that opens the switch (single pole it appears) and allows the bottom section of the cover to be removed. Incoming tails are on the left, sealed, and my tails are then accessible on the right.

So needs a tool, single pole, no label.

Guess I'll be fitting my DP isolation switch on their moth-eaten bit of chipboard after all...
