Generally though, you can.
the only problem i have is that the garage is at the other end of the garden
Not a problem if the design and construction of the distribution circuit complies with BS7671.

OK, this is the mechanical equivalent of what you jsut asked.
So yes, I could fix me car if I open the bonnet. You could wire your shed if you run a cable to it.
