contractors laying cables, what is it?

Traffic signals are usually orange, purple being used motorway services. Lighting on standard roads is still usually black.
That is broadly consistent (at least, for E&W) with the NJUG Guidelines to which I linked.
The green is not used by BT for any fibre, they still use grey.
Those guidelines do not seem to indicate that green is used for anything.

Kind Regards, John

Or black with a yellow stripe and "laser" symbols - that's what I watched them pulling in around here for the FTTC installations, and have seen going into sites getting a direct to the premises fibre for business internet services.

Green duct usually means Virgin Media, when it's dug up in central London you quite often see grey duct with green bends or vice versa - probably because BT/Openreach and Virgin (or their predecessors) often use the same contractors for 'civils'.

The black with yellow stripe 'cable' will be fibre tubing which is pulled into a duct (which will be grey if it's new, could clay or anything else that's been used in the last century). Once it's in the duct the fibre is blown through the empty tubing.

Around here, they're pulling in black/yellow stripe duct into existing ducts. Where ducts are full or blocked/damaged, new grey duct is installed, and the black/yellow stripe duct pulled into it. The fibre cable is then installed inside this.

For the most part here, the old ducts have allowed a swift install of fibre for FTTC cabs, but there have been a few road closures for trenching work to install new grey duct.

Yes indeed, it's blown fibre duct - I don't know if BT use anything else. For the purposes of this discussion, it's still a "fibre cable".

Same everywhere - unfortunately "my" cab was affected by some ducting problem so it didn't go live until a couple of weeks after the rest of the town :(
