cooker hood

Hope this is in the right section. I have got to fit a cooker hood in my kitchen, before i can open out my kitchen into a new extension. I just have a couple of question with regards them.
a)If it is a chimney type and i need to exit the ducting from the right hand side of it. What do I do with regards the chimney part/vertical upright. Do I just cut a section out of it to fit over the ducting?
b)Is there a maximum length you are required to have the ducting? The cooker is on an internal wall so I will need to come out of the right hand side of hood run for about 1.3m through wall right hand bend and a 2.7m run to out side wall.
