My other half wants to replace our existing electric cooker....

Currenty the supply is a 20A MCB feeding a 6mm cable to a switch, then onto the cooker...

Id like to know what you guys suggest is the maximum that can be installed on this current cabling etc..... MCB i know can be changed, but the cabling isnt that easy to so, so im suggesting we use existing cable and buy a cooker to fit to what we have...

However....

She is quite keen on the Hotpoint EW74G.... and i cant seem to find the detials on load etc anywhere....

Any pointers would be great

Thnx

M.A.

In general 6mm can carry up to 45 amps.

A 32 amp MCB will be sufficient for most cookers up to around 10kw - on the basis you're not going to be using everything at once and the elements cycle on thermostats.

If you use diversity & just have a cooker switch (without socket), you can fit a cooker of total approx. 19.2kW on a 32A circuit.

You take the first 10 Amps + 30% of the remainder.

19.2kW @ 230V = 83.48A

Take 10A, then 30% of 73.48A = 22.04A + 10A = 32.04

so in general if i was to upgrade the mcb to a 32A (i do have a spare 32A in the CU) the 6mm cable will be fine upto 10Kw...

I have no knowledge of cookers, appart from using them, so is there a way i can find out the max Kw usage of the one she wants to purchase?

thanks for the input so far ...

The manufacturers will deffo be able to tell you, the retailers should be able to tell you, failing that, look at the ratings plate on the appliance itself.

Cheers...

Ill make a call to the manufacturers tommrw.... weve not seen one in the shops, so retailers are a no no.... it will be a net purchase.... cheaper that way too....

Ill post my finds tomrw for you guys to confirm /point me in the correct direction.

Thanks again.

Morning Chaps...

Just spoken to Hotpoint regarding this new cooker....

The Total Rating is 10.7kw
Requires a double pole control unit
off a 32A breaker.

So from the above, should this be ok on the 6mm Cable as long as I swap out the current 20amp for a 32Amp?

Also the Double pole control unit, im thinking this is the isolation switch?

thanks again

Just a thaught but will i be better replacing the current isolation switch that has a socket built into it, with just a switch?
