Cooking Smells Leak into Neighbour through Ducting

Hi All,

I have a cooking extractor that has a flexible aluminum ducting connected to outside. The ducting runs between kitchen ceiling and upstairs bedroom. When we cook, our neighbour complains that strong cooking smells get into their home. We did a smoke test to rule out any route from outside. Our current hypothesis is that the ducting has some holes which leaks into interfloor space, which may be connected between the houses. Unfortunately the ducting is not accessible.

What are my options here? Is there a specialist service who can investigate the ducting from outside and potentially fix the holes? Or do I have to tear the bedroom floor up for any meaningful repairs?

Regards,

If neighbours have any vent or window near your vent the smell can be sucked into their property .Smoke test is unlikely to reveal that .

At that particular date we did the test, the wind was definitely blowing the smoke in the opposite direction, however while there was no visible smoke in their house, you could smell it. Do you mean a smell may travel differently from heavier elements?

Yes , your smoke test would have been very brief compared to the time cooking meals takes . Close to buildings the winds swirl , we can smell weed smoked 6 houses away .

If I want to assess whether there is any leak from the ducting, is there a specialist service who can help with that or is my only bet to tear the floor or the ceiling down?

I wouldn’t bother , it’s your neighbours problem .
