Are those the devices which retransmit their GPS co-ordinates on VHF?

Your flattened gas pipe is not an approved gas fitting and so not correct to use.

BUT, it seems you called him to service the boiler and sprung this extra requirement on him and probably did not intend to pay him much for it!

If you called me to cap off an old gas pipe then I would charge you £45 on its own. An extra £15 when doing a service ( @ £55 ) but would wish for prior notice so that I could ensure I had the correct part with me. I normally carry a 15 mm and a 22 mm compression cap though. A solder one is neater.

He did say he had actually ran out of the cap's.

to be fair it was sorta sprung on him as i just queried if it was a big job he said no and cracked on with it, didnt want anything for it as it was a quick job.

its not about not wanting to pay any one for work, if this form of capping it of wil not leak gas im more than happy. just dont wanna wake up one morning to a kitchen full of gas...

So for no payment at all he did something which got him discredited by all the RGIs here.

The reality is that its perfectly safe but just does not meet the gas regulations!

If it was an urgent requirement then perhaps he might have done that but ONLY as a temporary expedient before he brought the correct cap. He is very stupid to do that as a permanent solution. ( But if he was old and was doing that before it was outlawed then its more understandable ).

If it was not urgent ( as your case ) then he should have waited and come back with the right part AND charged you for the job ).

Hiya.

Thanks for the reply, It wasnt a urgent job as he could of come back however he only charged me £60 for a boiler service firefront on boiler service and to crimp the pipe.

i just wanted to know if i was likely to get a kitchen full of gas.

Hopefully he will have done a test at the meter for a few minutes to ensure there are no leaks!

Aactually, I'm fairly sure it's riddor able. Thats why he's discredited

It could be perfectly safe to drive without insurance or a driving licence.

But its against the law on both counts and therefore illegal.

I think that it is something that can be reported under the RIDOR actions. However, based on my only experience of following that procedure when a boiler was installed by a handyman and exploded, they just wrote a letter to the landlord! Nobody told me what they had done but I pestered them to tell me.

I will not be making that mistake again!

The key question on the RIDOR form id "how many people died?" If thats zero its obviously not very important.

What a total idiot to write that on a public forum, well done idiot - when would that be acceptable on a GAS pipe??

Why was it a mistake?

I will pose a question as the "Devils Advocate" here.

Would it be acceptable if the pipe was made from lead, As no approved fitting is made.
I still find installations that have runs of lead pipe with branches to the old gas lights capped in this way.

We used to think nothing of making a "Finger Taft" to join on to the lead meter tail with copper!!

no you are meant trace it back to copper
as lead is ncs by it self
or
you could do wiped joint and cap that

Not according to GSIU Regs 1998.

Regulation 5(2).57 - Appliances or meters may be connected to existing lead piping using suitable fittings, provided that piping is in a safe condition e.g there is no sign of damage.

Why is Tafting a piece of copper pipe into the lead classed as an approved fitting, When soldering the pipe end is not? :?
