Hi,

We are looking at getting our front and back door replaced.

We have got two quotes in to fit:
- Front door: White door/frame, Composite GRP, two glass panel with rose design.
- Back door: UPVC White with glass top.

Both existing doors are UPVC, so I have been told these are usually easier to remove (rather than wooden frames).

Both quotes had come back quite similar, but they are around the £1800-£1900 area - which is higher than we expected.

Are these excessive quotes or the norm?

If that's just labour then yes. Presuming this is ground floor and access and parking are OK you're probably looking at a max of a days work per door. You can work the rest out.

why haven't you got a quote for a proper door, made of wood? don't they have burglars where you live?

This is an all-in job (supply and fit) on the ground floor and easy access throughout.

eh? Everyone seems to be suggesting that a Composite door is stronger than a standard UPVC door and also wood. It is low maintenance with a GRP 'outer' - will not need sanding/and coating in 2yrs. I would think it would be a lot harder to fit a multi-point lock to a wooden door??

why is a wood door any better? have you ever seen the police kicking in a wooden door? takes 2 swings. good quality upvc takes much more

Not really much more unless you go for a higher quality door with a double skin/steel insert.

There are some tatty composites on the market. Choose a Rockdoor if available. We had a faulty rockdoor that was scrap. For a laugh we stuck it on bricks and drove the van over it. Blimmin solid!

Only if you specify it. Composites are tougher though.
