I'm going to be replacing some of the ch pipes in my house, and extending the system as well. I'm using copper pipe.

I have seen pictures of ch pipes laid in notched joists, without any clipping at all. Just loose in the notches, both the main 22m F and R as well as 15mm off-shoots to rads. Even pipes touching each other.

Is this Correct? I'm thinking they should be clipped. Also, shouldn't there be something between the pipes and joists to stop the pipes rubbing on joists and causing noise when expanding?

Any advice appreciated.

Its OK for the notches to support the pipes.

But the notch should be lined with felt to prevent expansion noises.

The same felt can be used to keep the pipes a small distance apart.
