Cousins and 2nd cousins

:? I hope this doesn't count as 'hi-jacking' but as the objective is to get a clear and correct information for Bahco, I think it is ok ?

Alison - I don't get the bit about second cousins. How can one's cousin's cousins (sorry Steve !) be related to you if they are not already your cousins ? What I am trying to say is that my father's sister's children are MY (first) cousins, as are my mother's sister's children. But the two sets of cousins - paternal and maternal sides - are not related to each other, which is what you appear to be saying ?

Do you disagree with my definition of second cousins, as illustrated in my reply to Bahco ?

I am not at all saying that you are wrong, but just like Bahco I am now very confused !!

PS Where are all the 'Know Alls' when we need them ?

Sorry, you're probably right  I really don't disagree with you cos I think I'm more confused than ever! I was looking at the chart and trying to work it out from there, but obviously I got all muxed ip!

And I'm with you - the more I type cousin, the more I think it doesn't look like it's spelt right.

The most likely scenario that most of us will recognise and encounter is this:

Using your child as "me" in the table above, your father's father is your child's great grandfather (possibly dead by now, but his children are probably still alive) and your father's brother's child (your cousin) is your child's first cousin, onced removed. Any child of your cousin is your child's second cousin.

You need to go way up and back down in your family tree to find a third cousin of your children who should be alive. The most likely possibility is a great grand child of one of your grandparents' siblings.

So what relation if any are my cousins grandchildren??

The Tw*ts call me grandad But I,m only 5 years older than them !!

Terry -

Assuming that the cousin you mention is your first cousin, then his children are your first cousins once removed and his (cheeky)grandchildren are your first cousins twice removed. (To be just first, second, or third cousins you both have to be of the same generation.)

Perry

(Could we be a double act - Terry and Perry....)
