Cover space under stairs

Need to put PB over this entry into a cupboard under my stairs. The hole will be fronted by kitchen cabinets, but top half will just go over this.

It had a door on before so frame is within.

Is it overkill to be building a stud frame if its not exposed? But worth putting support to top end to support back of worktop surface?

Build a timber frame within that frame set back the depth of the plasterboard and fix to that
