Hi guys,

I bought an old Victorian end terrace (built circa 1895) in the summer there. This is a pretty close diagram of the layout:

Over the past couple of weeks, we have noticed quite large (large in terms of length), quite noticeable cracks appearing in a couple of locations about the house. The first one we noticed was in the bedroom, which is on the first floor at the front of the house. The crack appears to have gone through the cornicing and about halfway along the ceiling. It is not originating from the gable-wall wall.

The next one we noticed is on the stairs, a few stairs short of the first return, starting at the skirting and going about halfway up the wall. This one is more fine and harder to notice. We had the stairs reskimmed a few months ago, so its fresh plaster. the cracks aren't at the same point of the house, the bedroom one would be at the front and the hallway would be at the back. Both are on the wall of the neighbouring house.

What would be anyone's first thought as to what could be causing these? Could it be the onset of the very cold weather? At the minute we don't put the heating on very often for very long, in the morning for an hour then in the evening for an hour. The house is very cold most of the time. The bedroom is always very cold as there is only one normal looking radiator heating quite a large room, and condensation in there is a bit of a problem. The hallway only has one small radiator which is down outside the living room door, apart from that, there are no others on either the first of second floors.

Thanks for reading.
