I have crosshead taps in the bathroom & need to replace the washers, asking a plumber friend how to remove the tap top (as I could not find a screw in the side) he suggested trying to prise the insert out to reveal the screw. After many hours prising & banging the washbasin taps I finally managed to remove the ceramic cap, but the bath taps just will not give in. Any suggestions.. (It would be possible for me to remove the bath mixer as one unit, but I cannot see how that will help me).

"the bath taps just will not give in"

what does that mean?
We have no idea what your taps look like. You often need a puller to get tap tops off. I have about three different ones for the purpose!
