Crumbling Bricks

I have a wall around my house with what look like fairly old bricks. While most are in good condition some (dotted all over the place) appear to be crumbling away to a powder, leaving the hard mortar hanging in mid air.

Any idea what might be causing only certain bricks to turn to powder?

i've only been here for 6 months so not sure if it is worse in winter...
