Hi,

I've nearly finished building a new workshop in the garden, clad with tongue and grooved boards, and the last job is to give it a couple of coats of preservative before the Winter.

I've read elsewhere that Cuprinol Ducksback is a good preservative to use, but on the cans it makes a point of saying it's ideal for rough sawn sheds and fences.

Since the cladding is not rough sawn, I'm wondering whether this is the best product to use?

Does anyone have any experience of using Cuprinol Ducksback on smooth T&G timber, or perhaps there is another product more suitable?

I'm aiming for a dark colour - perhaps even black.

All advice gratefully received.

Many thanks,
Tony.

I've used it on a self made gate - planed redwood. On smooth wood it doesn't take amazing well compared with say feather edge fencing. I roughed the wood with some P80 and it took much better. Once the first coat is dry the next goes on much better. The gate had 3 coats and has been spot on.

use it on my shed 2 coats every 3 or 4 years and still fully waterproof ten years on

I've had the wax/waterbased stains peel on smooth timber.

For my recent gate I used Wood Preservative (sprit based) which contains anti-fungal and insecticide chemicals, also a colour and a water-repellent finish. I used Wickes Own-brand but there is a similar-seeming Cuprinol. I have also used the Cuprinol on arris rails and fenceposts.

You have to stir them very thoroughly as the pigment sinks.

Seems very good so far.

The more coats you apply the darker it gets.

I like to soak the tops and bottoms of posts, and any cladding within 250mm of the ground, before build.

If you can find the Safety Datasheets you can see what preservatives it contains.

I used the Cuprinol garden shades on my self build shed that was clad with T&G, worked a treat. I have built a hit and miss fence for my daughter and used the Ducksback as the timber was rough sawn. Where any of the wood was smooth the Ducksback didn't seem to take but it did after 2 coats.
