Apart from the raised edges being a trip hazard, it would also create a problem when I'm mowing the lawn as I'd need a strimmer to go along the edges. Ideally the top of the grass should be 15mm above the top of the finished path so the mower can glide over.

However, in certain circumstances the raised edges would be great. Whatever, I really appreciate everyones help and advice.
 
Fair enough, it's your path.
Seems like cutting is going to be your only option then. I'd still go with the setts though if it's afordable, as I said I've got 350 or so slabs and whilist they're functional they're not as attractive.
