Hi!
can anyone help!
I am putting down cushionfloor on top of tongue & groove floorboards, with quite large gaps.

My question is due to height restrictions can I use duct tape to cover the gaps & lay the cushiofloor straight on top!!!!

Thanks in advance

Hi spenc,
Ideally you should put hardboard (laid rough side up) or 4mm plywood on the floor.
If you can't do that then fill in the gaps with a filler and then apply a scrape on coat of latex screed, mix it to produce a thick mix and then scrape it along the length of the boards with a trowel so that it scrapes along the top of the ridges and only fills in only the hollows and gaps (so that the height of the floor doesn't increase.
Cushioned vinyl is very flexible so if you lay it directly onto the boards it probably won't split...but the lines of the boards will show through and spoil the look of the floor.

Because cushion floors show every mark under the sun through the material and it being in a bathroom, i would recommend 6mm wpb ply. This will need to be nailed between 6 and 8 inches using ring shanks no longer than the thickness of the existing floor and ply combined. If you have any gaps in the ply then this should be filled with a Laytex smoothing compound as this is will not be affected by the same conditions as filler. Ensure that all nails are punched down. I would also recommend that you stick the floor down all over using an Acrylic flooring adhesive (follow instructions on glue to the letter), this will give you a proffesional job. :D Hope this helps.
An Ex Floor layer

Thanks for all the help.

But as we are selling early next year, I,m going to take the cheap option of laying hardboard.

Kind regard
