Cutting a hole in lath and plaster ceilings

Hi,

I need to cut a 100mm circular hole in the lath and plaster ceiling in the bathroom to install a vent.

Does anyone have any ideas as to the best way to do this without cracking the plaster - especially when you hit the lath. I have been reading different websites and they all say something different.

I have access to both sides of the ceiling.

I have access to both sides of the ceiling.

When cutting a hole through a lath and plaster ceiling,, cut the holle from down below rather than up above in the loft as you can cause a lot of damage cutting down through the lath and plaster.

12mm ply in the area above the hole between the joists batton each side screwed in to support then drill up into the board

I would hole saw straight up from below, as it's lath and plaster you'll go through it in less than 5 seconds but the price of that holesaw won't be cheap. It's the sort of thing you'll use once and not again for years and years, depending on how much DIY you do of course

Chain drill the 100mm hole in the plaster without cutting the laths. Remove the plaster discs. Then jigsaw away the laths.

Just drill a hole and use a padsaw. Ive done it for recesed spotlights with no problems.
