Cutting asbestos sheets!!!

What I find interesting about this thread, is that nobody with any actual experience of corrugated asbestos roofs has chipped in so far.

ie: Someone who has actually paid a contractor to remove and dispose of such a roof.

Or: Someone who does this or has done so in the past, how would they go about it and how much would they charge?

There was a property developing show on Channel 5 last night (Tuesday) where 2 blokes bought a house that had asbestos in it. Next week they demolish it, it'll be interesting to see what precautions are taken by the builders, and how much they quote for the job.

Maybe they havent commented on the removal of Asbestos because you plan to Install it, not remove it. I have removed some from a shed in my garden a few years back and there are rules you have to follow. I you were MY neighbour, you would get a visit from the Enviroment Officer.

You can REMOVE Asbastos Cement products yourself as long as you follow the guidelines required by law. Look on your local Council Website, they should have all the info you require, or contact your Enviromental Officer. Some Council Tips will accept this type of waste from private householders free of charge, subject to certain conditions.

That's a wild assumption, and a wrong one, as per most wild assumptions.

I don't know whether or not my material was corrugated, but the council wrote to me and said that my porch contained asbestos, and they gave me a list of licensed contractors. On the basis that the list was probably compiled only after a set of backhanders was received, I immediately contacted two who were not on the list, and engaged the one who sounded less dodgy; he was actually the dearer one of the two. I won't tell you how much it cost me because you aren't capable of making your decision based on health and safety anyway.

Just to throw in that you need to allow for the cost of a new hoover since you, no not even you, do not want to be using it again once its been exposed to asbestos. splendid to distribute fine asbestos fibre through your home afterwards.

Keep this in perspective this guy is going to do the job and is taking reasonable precautions it is going to be a one off so is not really going to cause any ill effects to his health. I would get your mask on wet the sheets up a bit and cut them with a hand saw. stick them on your garage and let that be the end of it.

It's already in perspective - the only reasonable precaution is to engage a specialised and licensed contractor. All other precautions are illegal and therefore unreasonable.

Is it? How can you tell? And if it wasn't, does that mean it wouldn't be alright anymore?

As I've said before, I care as much about his health as he cares about that of his family and his neighbours.

I would call a contractor and let that be the end of it.

look he's going to cut a few sheets of asbestos down the bottom of his garden probably do less harm then all the other **** we breathe in during a lifetime at work.

Softus are you sure you've never broken the law or done anything that contravenes Health and safety.

I have an asbestos shed roof too and when I remove it I will make sure my contractor comes and removes it on a damp winters day    .....yep sure, not when it actually fits into his schedule. No wonder these asbestos removal people are charging so much, poor bastards can't work during the summer.

I already did "look", hence I already know what he's intending to do - why are you repeating it? Are you trying to make the offence sound less bad by writing it down more times?

On what do you base the 'knowledge' that the harm he does will somehow negate the effects of other harmful substances?

On the contrary - I know perfectly well when and what law I've broken.

chappers said:

Not knowingly, not intentionally, and not with prior publication in the apparent attempt to gain credence by airing the cowardly intention and by playing down the fact that it's illegal.

And even if I had/have broken the law, does that disqualify me from expressing my opinion and pointing out that the poster intends to break the law and that some other posters are encouraging him?

I'm not sure what you're laughing-out-loud at, but I don't see this as a laughing matter.

Imagine after all this the guy actually lives on a farm 10 miles from anyone else AND he is 80!!

On a serious note, for all you people that may be carrying out any work like our man here is doing, there is 2 books available from the HSE.

Asbestos essentials task manual (£8.50) and
Introduction to asbestos essentials (£12.50)

We regularly refer to these books which are excellent in identifying and working with asbestos. The book will explain about the one hour per week working with asbestos rule, which, hopefully you will slot into with regards to your garage roof.
