Hi all,

We are installing a laundry chute in our Victorian home and want access via the landing, which means cutting a 300mm square hole in a brick wall. We will mount a safe fire door on both ends. How do I work out if I need to put a steel lintel in above a brick and a half by 3 brick opening?

You probably don't need a lintel at all, for that size opening structurally. As a rule, a PCC lintel would do.

A new one on me! Reminds me of the bin chute we had in the high rise council block I once lived in, I can still remember the smell from it too.

It might be useful as an intercom, you could stick your head into the bottom and shout "dinner's ready" to all the upstairs rooms at once.
