Any tips on hanging paper on a breast and cutting it around a fairly complex Victorian fireplace? I know the corners of the of the breast is where you make the joins, but how do you cut around the mantle and then into the sides of the fireplace where it goes in quite a bit?

With practice!

It's done by cutting then maneuvering the paper and doing another cut and so on until it's complete. You've also got to be careful that you don't put too much tension on the paper as it will tear along your cuts. Probably one of the trickiest parts of paper hanging is cutting around ornate fixtures and fittings.

In part for you yes, firstly you should ascertain what the pattern is, in simple terms bold or otherwise, this will have great bearing on the striking of your vertical. Also you need to establish that when the reveals are encountered that no more than 3" of paper are turned around them.

Fair play, I maybe should have went into more detail in regards to whether or not to centre the first drop or hang to the side of the centre line. Also about the prep involved and whether or not the op should line first. Also the fact that the op should size(thinned down paste) /or coat up with gardz first before lining and if not lining then before hanging the finish paper.

I was simply commenting on cutting around the fire surround.

Listen are you going to offer the op the correct advice or not, if not leave it to someone who can.

Well with out seeing the pattern, the repeat, the measurements of the breast, the substrate, the hanging info/recommendations, the fire surround, I can't really advise any further. I'll bow out and watch for your advice here dec! Go for it!

Questions then perhaps you should have asked, and I will when I have a better grasp of the work in hand.

Well getting back to the point of the thread and why I answered with my original post

Maybe you can explain in better detail than myself and help the op out instead of having this amusing spat with me big guy!

I am rather big, very tall to. Yet for the life of me I cannot see what my stature has to do with advising on a mere and simple routine regarding paperhanging!!

Well you may or may not require steps or other access equipment that may need a mention!

No I would not think that I would, to paperhang around a victorian fireplace.
