Whilst stripping plaster from a wall a while ago I rather stupidly tried to remove what I thought was just skirting from the stairs that enter my attic, the wood split right along the length and has left a mess , I believe they call the piece it the inner string?

is it possible to repair this?

could another piece be made to sit in front of the damaged piece, I could then just pack the wall out flush with the damage piece when I plasterboard it or could the top of it be cut out somehow and have another piece made?

how hard would it be to make a piece to fit ?

hi, unless you made some kind of capping piece or filled it you are pretty much stuffed
the strings hold the entire staircase together, you cant remove them without taking everything apart, then you would have to redo your seat and top cuts, so pretty much a bad idea

could you try and fill it and plane it to uniform thickness?
or put a piece of beading or quadrant on top of the string?

hope this helps

definitely not good but pictures off the damage will help
i am assuming its against and secured to a wall along its full length on the damaged side ??

thanks for the replies

I will try and get a photo soon

it's just the top part that is damaged and it runs about flush with the top of the risers, it's structurally sound but looks nasty so I really just need a way of hiding it by putting up a false string over it once i've plasterboarded the wall
