Hi,
I have a wet/damp patch on an wall, on the top of the chimney breast, and in the room behind on wall backing onto the chimney.
House is solid wall. Chimney has been removed from loft upwards and roof replaced (no leaks). Chimney breast is still in bedroom (and grate is open). In chimney is open to the loft (i.e cut off at ceiling level). Loft is insulated (270mm) around the cut off chimney, but not over it.
Wall is damp to the touch.
Any suggestion what the cause could be? Is it possible that the open chimney is causing a cold area, causing condensation on the walls? Would insulating over the chimney help? If the fire grate is removed, should the chimney be blocked completely, or air brick fitted? as it is not a functional chimney
