We have just removed some nasty old woodchip from our wall and have discovered a damp patch underneath it. I think this is coming in from outside and the guttering needs redoing which we will do. We sealed it and painted over it but there is now a big damp stain on the wall - does anyone know how we deal with this?

Thanks a lot

Well to be fair I am not sure as the painter we hired said that he sealed it!

Do you think I need to get a damp expert out?

Theres no need for your expert to be damp when he comes out...a dry one will do just as well

When your dealing with damp there is a general rule that you must stem the source of damp first, otherwise all the damp treatments in the world will eventually fail.

Your dekkie (hopefully) used a product such as 'no more damp' or similar it does work pretty weill providing the source had been stopped...if not the damp will eith cause it to bubble or go around it so you end up with an arc of stain on the wall (normally brownie yellow)

Could be one of two or three things

Your painter didnt seal it

Your painter did 'seal' it but with a drop of oil based undercoat or gloss'

Because you havnt sorted out the source.

Sort that out first before you go getting any experts out.

thanks very much for your advice - do you know who I would need to get out to look for the source - I think I know where it is coming from but can't be sure.

A decent builder should be able to tell you
