Hi, I have got damp on my upstairs chimney breast. I have painted the wall with gloss and then an emulsion, but the damp still shows. Are there any products on the market that I can buy to remedy the problem. Any replies will be welcome. Regards Dave

The probable problem is that your chimney doesn't have a flue liner so the water gets into the brick. You can sometimes sort it by using a car type spray paint or a stain block, but it's rarely sorted until you stop the cause.

Hi. It could be caused by a number of factors such as porous cappings, leaking lead flashing or just basically porous brickwork allowing the damp and water in. My advice is that you wont fix your chimney problem from the inside, you'll have to get someone to fix it from the outside.

good luck. :D

You don't mention the age of the property but in my experience, if you have used oil based paint as a blocker then emulsion and it's still coming through then the years of wood burning etc etc has permeated the brickwork/ plaster. Is the staining brownish in colour and I don't refer to waterstaining? Not being funny but lick it, is it salty? If so then having had a good look on the exterior walls to make sure pointing or rendering is sound and intact and roof tiles are good then the problem will be the internal stack's brickwork. You will need to strip the walls back to brick, scratch and top coat with sand/ cement rendering[ Waterproofed] then skim plaster top coat x 2 which will resolve your problem. Good luck
