Photo of external conservatory wall. damp can clearly be seen between block-work. it is on two separate walls, so is not specific to one wall. have put heater on (previously none) and damp has started to recede.

can anyone tell me the cause of this (other than water!) and if it is serious or if we should just get wall heaters mounted on conservatory walls to eradicate in future.

Condensation. Classic pattern staining. Increase ventilation and heating.
