Danfoss TRV question

I am having problems with my radiators, and wonder if it could be due to the kids fiddling with the thermostats:

We have thermostats similar to this one,where you can turn the central dial (ie.the one on the front face of the whole TRV unit) as well as turn the unit to the desired number:

What does that central, "face" dial do?
I can't seem to find any instructions on how it works anywhere online.
