If an electrician finds a system to be unsafe would he/she have the authority to shut the system off untill the problem it fixed and tested by an appropriate authority? I have seen many pictures of dangerous work shown on this site and it set me wondering if electricians have such athourity.

We are advised we cannot do this unless the customer is happy to be disconnected from all/part of their supply.

Sadly we do not have the same powers as Gas fitters to protect the public from themselves.

I do this regularly. I dont turn anyones circuits off. I test circuits and if they are not safe, then I will not re energise them unless the customer signs a disclaimer form. It is up to the customer

Thank you all for your answers. I have had a gas fitter disconnect my central heating because a draw rubber seal was perished in about one third of the draw. He fixed it the next day. Even if you do not have the authority any sensible person would take your advice.
