Hi

Can anyone explain why there might be black debris in the mains supply? It sometimes appears at all taps and sometimes in the washing machine but not all the time. Apparently this has been happening on and off for some years now. Supply pipes are all copper, although not sure about outside the house.

Thanks v much

Your water company are probably working on the pipes nearby and kicking all sorts of crud into the pipe.

It depends on what the local mains are made of - but my dad gets all sorts in his. We had to fit mesh filters on the inlet becaseu it was taking out the tap mechanism in the kitchen.

hot or cold?

i am wondering if hot is something in your loft tank?

years ago, when i was at home we noticed a funny smell when any hot tap was on, my now late fater found a dead bird covered in "jelly" in the loft water tank

What sort of debris?

Is it hard/soft, fibre or plastic?

If it is like tea leaves - smudge it between your fingers. If it smudges brown or grey then it is likely to be lead, in which case I recommend you contact your local Water Co and enquire about the level of lead in your drinking water. They may take a sample, they may just relay their part of the supply pipe and advise you on further action.
